Premier League Week 2 Review

barclays-premier-league returns

Introduction

We backed Everton to beat Arsenal this weekend at odds of 2.8 and we were robbed as Arsenal scored two goals in the final seven minutes to level things up against the toffee’s. Fortunately Manchester City and Liverpool were able to provide the goal feast that I expected on Monday evening which means our over 2.5 goals bet won.

Chelsea remain at the top of the Premier League table alongside Spurs, Man City and Swansea after their 2-0 win against the newly promoted Leicester City, Jose Mourinho’s side did not hit top gear but were still able to record their second win of the campaign. Last season Chelsea lacked a goalscorer however they appear to have that in Diego Costa this year who has scored two goals in his opening two matches. Can Mourinho’s men win the title this year? I think so.

Aston Villa v Newcastle

It was a dull affair at Villa Park on Saturday with the match finishing 0-0. Despite this I was impressed with Newcastle who I think are in for a good season. The players Alan Pardew has brought it look to be exciting prospects especially Remy Cabella and Daryl Janmaat who both produced decent performances against Villa on the weekend. Siem De Jong also made his first appearance in a Newcastle United shirt after he came on for the final 20 minutes of the match, he looked lively and had the best chance of the game which forced a good save from Brad Guzan. Toon fans will be hoping the Dutchman will provide the goals to catapult Newcastle into the top half this season which is something I think they will comfortably achieve.

Recommended Bet: Top ten finish: Newcastle – Coral @ 2.3

Crystal Palace v West Ham

Managerless Crystal Palace have now lost their opening two games of the Premier League season after they were thrashed 3-1 by West Ham at Selhurst Park. Palace are clearly lacking leadership after Tony Pulis’s departure and may struggle this season if they continue to leak goals at the back. West Ham on the other hand were very impressive and it was a game to remember for Hammers fans as Stewart Downing and Carlton Cole scored in the same game. Mauro Zarate also scored his first goal for West Ham and what a strike it was from the Argentine who was very lively throughout the game, he looks to be a very good signing by Big Sam.

Everton v Arsenal

The game of the week came at Goodison Park where Roberto Martinez's side threw away a 2-0 lead against Arsenal. Giroud’s 90th minute header resulted in a 2-2 draw between these two who are both hoping for a top four finish. Arsenal were disappointing and so was Alexis Sanchez who is yet to live up to expectations, Arsene Wenger’s side must improve if they want to challenge Manchester City and Chelsea for the Premier League title. However Wenger does appear to have made a top signing in Calum Chambers who has settled into this Arsenal side very quickly, the young Englishman kept the experienced Frenchman Laurent Koscielny out of the starting eleven.

Manchester City v Liverpool

Liverpool were poor defensively at the Etihad Stadium on Monday evening despite the signings of Lovren and Moreno who both started the match. Last season Liverpool’s defence proved to be their Achilles heal and Brendon Rodgers will be hoping for an improvement in that department this season despite looking poor defensively in their opening two matches. Liverpool also have Champions League football this season which they did not have last year, this will inevitably stretch their squad, could Liverpool fans be in for a tough season? Man City on the other hand looked very strong and Jovetic is like a new signing for Manuel Pellegrini as he missed the majority of last season through injury. Personally I think Manchester City are Chelsea’s only title challengers and it will be interesting to see if Man City can continue their promising start to the season.

Recommended Bet: Not to finish in the top 4: Liverpool – SkyBet @ 1.91
